What is a good entry-level DSLR camera that takes good action shots?

I'm looking for a DSLR at a budget of about $700-$800. I mostly want to take pictures of my dog and sports, so a camera that takes good action shots would be best for me. Based on my research so far the NIkon D3100 looks good but any input would be appreciated.
