Did Irish people with English,Scottish,Welsh surnames "adopt" those names or were their ancestors English etc?

I'm guessing it could be either. You would have to do your own research to find out. Family history can be strange. I found out that some of my ancestors once signed an anti-Catholic treaty in 1827 and for at least the last 120 years, we have been Catholic. I have no idea where the change came.
