How much nation security information is a former president (such as Bush) privy to?

Obama personally called Bush to inform him of the killing of Bin Laden. In his speech, Obama insinuated that both Bush and Clinton knew the actions that were being taken against Bin Laden. I guess what I am asking if the information was simply a courtesy or if it is customary to include the former presidents in nation intelligence.
