How should I dress for an entry level job?

I'm talking retail and fast food here. Should I just wear nice shoes, slacks, belt, and shirt (tucked in)? Or should I put on a tie or maybe even a whole suit as well? Or is that way too much? Should I dress exactly as I would for the interview when I go to pick up the application?
